Peridot – The Gemstone for August Birthstone Jewelry

Peridot is the modern birthstone for August, and in addition to being used in August birthstone jewelry is the gemstone selected to mark the 16th wedding anniversary. This particular precious stone is a variety of olivine which is a combination of 2 minerals, forsterite and foylite. It is still quite doubtful where the word peridot originates from, whether it is derived from the French word peritot, which means unclear or the word for gem in Arabic, faridat. Whatever the case may be the gem was called peridot firstly by the French sometime in the 18th century. Before this time the Peridot precious stone was simply called topaz.

For more than 4000 years peridot has been mined as a precious stone and is even talked about in the Bible where it was was called by the Hewbrews, pitdah. Peridot is the state gem of Egypt and was used in Egyptian jewelry from at least three thousand years ago. It was called the “sun gem” since miners from long ago thought that it shone with a green light that made the gemstone easy to find. This lovely jewel is becoming increasingly popular perhaps because of the stories denoting it as Cleopatra’s  favorite gemstone.

Description of the Peridot Gem

Throughout the years this valuable August gemstone has often been mistaken for other gemstones. The peridot birthstone is usually described as a light olive green with tints of yellow. The gems most often mistaken for the peridot are emeralds, apatite, garnets and zircon, all of which rarely have the attractive tint of yellow that compliments the peridot’s green color.

The Quality of Peridot Gems

Peridots having less than 17% iron and the trace elements nickel and chromium are those of the best quality. Peridot is found in an island in the Red Sea called Zebirget , Pakistan Minas Gerais, Chihuahua, Mexico, Brazil, Eifel, Kohistan, Germany, Ethiopia, Australia, Peridot Mesa, Gila County, USA, Arizona and Salt Lake Crater. Historically the highest quality peridot came from Egypt but some remarkable specimens have been found in Pakistan that are challenging this claim.. The gems discovered in Arizona are of inferior quality but are more abundant, so making them much more affordable for many people. In the region of 85 – 95% of world production of peridot comes from Arizona. Pakistani and Egyptian gems are better quality and rarer and consequently are more expensive.

Mystical Powers of the Peridot

This  gorgeous August birthstone symbolizes dignity and success and it’s also thought of armor for for all the body as it defends against negativity. It is also associated with relaxation and the reduction of stress. The Egyptians used this precious stone to heal and clean the heart. Some sicknesses such as asthma and fever were cured by placing some powdered peridot under the tongue. A further belief is that it’s powers are amplified by setting it in gold.
